The end deliverable of the project is to improve the seismic resilience of the Capital city of Yangon in Myanmar. The majority of the subject buildings were constructed in the late 1800s and early 1900s during British Colonial rule of Myanmar. The buildings include two major marketplaces in the central business district (Bogyoke and Theingyi), and key infrastructure including a pumping station and air compressor station. The outcome was to devise a list of the retrofit solutions in order of priority based on pre-determined criteria, considering the limited budget. One of the underlying goals of the project was to transfer knowledge to both the client and local specialists to provide case studies and experience so that similar development or retrofit in Myanmar to be undertaken in the future. The knowledge transfer occurred through involvement of local (incountry) consulting companies, technical seminars and preparation of guidance documents.
