The Horowhenua District Council (HDC) replaced the 70 year old Waitārere Beach Surf Club with this magnificent building to fit into the landscape of the beach coastline. The building aimed to strike a good balance between engineering, architecture and ease of use, to deliver a tough and resilient building as part of the HDC requirements and community outcomes identified in the 2021-2041 Long Term Plan.
Miyamoto New Zealand in partnership with Homestead Construction and the rest of the consultant team collaborated to design this building in accordance to the vision that was intended.
The Waitārere Beach Surf Club is a two storey building. The gravity and lateral force resisting systems of the building are concrete walls and frames. The walls and first floor beams are precast and the columns are cast in-situ. The roof is constructed of light channel purlins on structural steel rafter on hollow section posts.
