The Masonic Villages Trust wanted to greatly expand andmodernise the Care Facility at their Woburn Village. The new Care Facility was to be a combinationof upgraded and re-purposed existing buildings and new construction. A major constraint was the requirement thatthe remainder of the village remained open throughout and that disruption tothe residents was minimised.
For the new two-storey portion we designed an Armadillo foundation. The existing portions to be re-used were constructed with conventional timber floors on piles. These required upgrading to meet current codes and Importance Level 3 requirements.
As well as design, Miyamoto monitored the construction. Whilst the new portions were relatively straightforward, many details of the existing structure differed from the construction drawings which resulted in many last-minute changes to keep the contractor on track and the resulting building fully compliant.
The new Care Facility opened in early 2023.
