The 11-storey concrete frame building located at 385 Queen Street was constructed in the mid-1980s. It houses educational facilities, office space and car parking. Miyamoto was engaged during the client’s due diligence process prior to purchase. The building was identified as 40% NBS, primarily due to the hollowcore floor, floor diaphragm. Miyamoto provided a strengthening solution by analysing the diaphragm, the %NBS rating was found to be greatly improved by including tie elements which were missing or inadequate from the original design. Through collaboration with our internal Geotechnical team and by conducting non-linear pushover and time history analysis, the main lateral resisting system of the building was shown to be adequate for the strengthening target once the diaphragm issues were resolved.
